The lyrics to the song “I Am The Owl” by the Dead Kennedys, scanned from the album Plastic Surgery Disasters on Alternative Tentacles in 1983. I bought this record in around 1987 and it definitely had an enormous impact—in part because of the interesting collage graphics in the thick booklet that comes with the record. I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately and its extraordinary power is only felt even more deeply by the fact that things have gotten so much worse in the last 30+ years. Musically, this is some of Jello Biafra’s most nuanced and theatrical singing, with nearly every line of lyrics given a completely individual and specific tonal and emotional articulation. It’s really something amazing to pay attention to, if you can get past the furious anger that this song generates as it details the myriad ways the U.S. government gets off on destroying lives.
